When I started my RIA in July 2020, I leaned primarily into two platforms:

Twitter & YouTube

I believed they had the best combination of distribution + discovery + community-building.

In July 2021, a year after getting started, I shared my Twitter growth strategy with members of PlannerDAO.

Below is the full recording, along with key takeaways & tips:

Some highlights from the episode:

  • Engagement is Key: It's not just about posting; it's about building relationships through comments, retweets, and direct messages
  • The Power of Threads: Can serve as mini blog posts, allowing you to share valuable insights and establish authority in your niche
  • Finding Your Niche: Can help you connect with your target audience more effectively
  • Long-Term Strategy: Twitter is not a quick lead generation tool; it's about building relationships & showing expertise over time
  • Real Success Stories: Sharing how to connect with potential clients and grow your business, including a story about how a simple tweet led to a new client

How to Make Twitter Work for You

  • Have a clear bio
  • Create a "link in bio"
  • Create your pinned tweet
  • Engage with others
  • Be consistent

Your bio should clearly list:

  • What you do
  • Who you help
  • Include a link

What is a "thread"?

A long-form piece of content on Twitter that consists of multiple tweets all tied together - like these:

Best kinds of content for threads:

  • Things you’ve learned as an advisor
  • Client wins / stories
  • Mistakes to avoid
  • Interesting, not-common-knowledge finance info
  • Business accomplishments, lessons learned
  • Blog posts (key points broken down)
  • Complex information made simple

Helpful thread tips:

  • Include images/GIFs to make it more fun & engaging
  • Over time, go back and rewrite / add to it
  • Design & formatting matters (one sentence per line, tiered lists)
  • Tag relevant people
  • Include a TL;DR

Th Value of Native Content

The point is to take top of funnel content (blogs, podcasts, videos) and natively embed it into social platforms.

  • Threads are just twitter blog posts
  • Carousels are just instagram blog posts
  • Slideshows are just linkedin blog posts

The Takeaway

Twitter is just one piece of distribution within a whole marketing strategy.

The purpose of all marketing is to drive awareness and get someone one step closer to doing business with you.

  • Create content to serve that purpose
